Many people don't really understand what the ProPEL program is. And I'm not going to lie, up until a couple of weeks ago I didn't really understand what it was all about either. After spending a week succumbed in ProPEL's principles and education tactics, it has become very clear to me that ProPEL is about us.
This way of learning is so hyper focused on our needs as individual students. It's hard to believe that a program like this is finally available for those involved in our education system. Each student's coursework is individually tailored to embrace their passions and therefore, increase the want to learn within young people.
The first day, was awkward to say the least. Nerves definitely came into play when it came to making friends. However, a quick team building trip to The Exchange District put a stop to any of the privacy we had previously kept. It's hard to keep to yourself when you are surrounded by the same 20 people all day, every day. I mean, we have now spent just a little over a week together and already our relationship as a group could rival the closest of friends.
The jovial atmosphere within our walls has definitely made the redesign of our classroom one of the most collaborative processes I have ever been a part of. The amount of real life lessons -such as; communication, planning, cooperation, and compromise- that can be taken away from this process is astronomical. ProPEL encourages students to learn through doing, and that is exactly what is taking place in our classroom right now.
It has been a great start to the semester so far, and I can't wait to see what comes next!
